Shane Reaches Final Round of Qualifying at Dallas Challenger

DALLAS – Three members of the Virginia men’s tennis team were in action Sunday during the second day of qualifying at the Challenger of Dallas, a stop on the ATP Challenger Tour at the TBarM Club on Sunday. Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) advanced to the final round of qualifying, while Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.), Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) suffered losses.
Shane posted a 6-7(4), 6-2, 7-5 win over Dennis Novikov, who played No. 1 singles for NCAA runner up UCLA last season. This came after a 6-2, 6-3 win over Andrew Carter, who played collegiately at Louisville, in the first round of qualifying. He will play the No. 2 seed Wilson Leite of Brazil on Monday for a place in the main draw.
Frank fell to former Michigan All-American Jason Jung, the No. 4 seed in qualifying, 6-4, 6-1 in the second round. He had beaten former SMU standout Artem Baradach of Belarus in the first round, 6-4, 6-3.
Kwiatkowski was edged by former UCLA standout Nick Meister, the No. 3 seed in qualifying, 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(4). He had posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hans Hach Verdugo of Mexico in the first round.
