RALEIGH, N.C.—The Virginia women’s swimming and diving team defeated ACC rival NC State, 178.5-115.5, Saturday (Feb. 1) at Casey Aquatic Center, while the men fell to the Wolfpack, 157-141. The No. 7 Cavalier women improved to 10-1 on the season, while the No. 20 men fell to 5-5.

Freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) swept the women’s distance events, including times of 4:47.56 in the 500 free and 9:45.66 in the 1,000 free. Sophomore Hanne Borgersen (Frederick, Md.) and senior Rachel Naurath (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) finished second and third in the 500 and senior Caroline Kenney (Suwanee, Ga.) and junior Kelly Offutt (Reisterstown, Md.) completed the 1-2-3 sweep in the 1,000.

Sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) swept the backstroke events, including the 100 (53.54) and 200 (1:56.48), while junior Shaun Casey (Port Orange, Fla.) claimed the 400 IM (4:20.57) and 200 fly (2:00.61).

Naurath picked up a win in the 200 free (1:50.21), just ahead of junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky. – 1:50.75) and Borgersen (1:51.05). Freshman Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) touched first in the 200 breast in 2:16.29.

On the men’s side, seniors Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) and Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) went 1-2 in both the 500 free (4:28.68 and 4:29.29) and 1,000 free (9:15.70 and 9:15.76). Sophomore Rodney Fentress (Virginia Beach, Va.) completed the UVa sweep in the 1,000, placing third in 9:22.28.

Sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) won the 200 back in 1:45.76, while classmate Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) claimed the 200 breast in 2:00.84, just ahead of senior Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt.) in 2:01.23.

On the women’s diving boards, sophomores Becca Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) and Katie Warburg (Wilton, Conn.) each picked up a first and second-place finish. Corbett won the 1-meter event (271.05), while Warburg placed first on the 3-meter boards (290.63).

In men’s diving, junior JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned 339.0 points on the 1-meter boards and 386.02 on the 3-meter boards to pick up two wins. Sophomores Carl Buergler (Arlington, Va.) and Jordan Sacks (Wilmette, Ill.) completed the UVa 1-2-3 sweep on the 3-meter boards, scoring 384.07 and 326.33 points, respectively.

The Cavaliers return to action next weekend when they host Pitt on Feb. 8 at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. Diving action will commence at 9:30 a.m., with swimming scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. Virginia’s 20 seniors will be honored in a ceremony in between the diving and swimming at noon.
