UVa Women's Golfers in Fifth Place to Open FSU Match-Up

Tallahassee, FL – The 30th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team shot 10-over 298 and ended the first day of play at the Florida State Match-Up Tournament tied for fifth place in the Cavaliers’ first spring tournament. The 11-team field is competing at the Southwood Golf Course in Tallahassee, Fla.
The first-round lead is shared by No. 13 South Carolina and No. 39 Texas A&M at 5-over 293.
Virginia was led in the opening round by Briana Mao, who shot even par 72 to finish the first day tied for fifth place. Lauren Coughlin is in ninth place at 73 while Lauren Diaz-Yi is 27th at 76. Portland Rosen and Elizabeth Brightwell are tied for 34th at 77.
Florida State’s Matilda Castren leads the field at 4-under 68.
In addition to traditional collegiate scoring, the tournament features a unique team scoring component. The participating teams are paired in twosomes during the first two rounds and play in threesomes in the final round. The twosomes consist of partners playing together. The match-up portion of the tournament is determined by taking the best four scores from each of the partners and the lowest scores to make up the match-up partner total.
At the end of the tournament, the partners with the lowest score will win the Match-Up championship. The team and individual champions will also be crowned. Notre Dame was forced to withdraw from the field due to travel issues caused by weather.
