Tallahassee, FL – The 30th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team opened the spring portion of its schedule by finishing fourth at the 11-team Florida State Match-Up Tournament. The Cavaliers’ shot 6-over 294 during Sunday’s final round for a three-day total of 24-over 888.

South Carolina, ranked No. 13, won the event at 7-over 871 while No. 12 Clemson was second at 873 and No. 46 Florida State was third at 881.

Virginia was led by freshman Lauren Diaz-Yi who finished tied for seventh at 3-over 219. She shot a career-best 2-under 70 during the final round for a 54-hole total of 219. Both her tournament score and finish were bests for the UVa first-year player. She became the fifth Cavalier to lead the team in scoring in five tournaments this year.

Briana Mao and Elizabeth Brightwell tied for 16th for UVa. Both players shot 3-over 75 during the final round. Lauren Coughlin was 25th at 225 and Portland Rosen placed 29th at 226. Coughlin shot 74 during Sunday’s play while Rosen finished with a 75.

Florida State’s Matilda Castren took medalists honors at 10-under 206. She led the tournament from wire-to-wire.

Virginia and Clemson, paired up as part of the tournament’s unique match-up format, combined to win that portion of the tournament. They finished with a score of 1092, two strokes better than the tandem of South Carolina and Mississippi State.

The match-up portion of the tournament was determined by taking the best four scores from each of the partners and the lowest scores to make up the match-up partner total.

Notre Dame was forced to withdraw from the field due to travel issues caused by weather.

The Cavaliers are off until March 7 when they play at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
