No. 20 Virginia Men Start ACC Championship Wednesday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The No. 20 Virginia men’s swimming and diving team competes for its seventh Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Wednesday-Saturday (Feb. 26-March 1) at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
Swimming action will be competed starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday with the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay at 7 p.m. Prelims begin the next three days at 11 a.m. with finals starting at 7 p.m.
Diving action occurred last week at the GAC, with the Cavalier duo of junior JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore Carl Buergler (Arlington, Va.) picking up 102 points for UVa. Virginia Tech leads with 205 points, followed by Florida State (169), Miami (156), Duke (125), UVa (102), UNC (98), Notre Dame (78), Pittsburgh (75), Georgia Tech (55) and NC State (23).
The ACC Digital Network will broadcast the finals on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Links to the free live video and live results will be available and linked through VirginiaSports.com.
One change of note in this year’s Championship is the addition of the scoring of all 24 competitors competing in a swimming final. In previous years, only the top-16 competitors received points that counted toward their team’s total.
In 2013, Virginia won its sixth consecutive title with 759.5 points, ahead of Virginia Tech (597), North Carolina (549) and Florida State (534). UVa won five events, including three that were won by student-athletes who returned this season. Senior Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) won the 1,650 free, classmate Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt.) touched first in the 200 breast and fellow senior Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) captured the 500 free. Sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) was named the 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year after winning the consolation final in the 200 back at the NCAA Championship.
Virginia finished the dual-meet season with a 6-5 record, including a 2-3 record in conference competition, defeating Pitt and Duke. UVa (No. 20) is one of five teams ranked in the latest College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll. North Carolina (No. 14), Virginia Tech (No. 15), NC State (No. 18) and Florida State (No. 19) are all ranked in the national rankings, while conference newcomer Notre Dame is also receiving votes.
