CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (13-14, 6-8 ACC) plays its final regular-season home game of the 2013-14 campaign, hosting Miami (14-13, 6-8 ACC) on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va.
Senior captains Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.), Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) and Kelsey Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) will be honored in a brief on-court ceremony at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Thursday night as part of the annual Senior Day celebration, commemorating the final regular-season home game of their Cavalier careers.
Virginia leads the all-time series against Miami, 8-4, including a 62-52 win last season in Charlottesville.
Miami and Virginia are currently in a three-way tie with Florida State for eighth place in the ACC. Virginia and Florida State will close out the regular season facing one another on Sunday, March 2 at 12:30 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla. Florida State hosts Georiga Tech on Thursday night. Miami finishes off the regular season by hosting Pitt on Sunday. Official seedings for the ACC Tournament, which is being held March 5-9 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C., will be announced Sunday evening.
The Hurricanes come into the game having won two of their last three games with a 76-73 victory at Florida State last Thursday (Feb. 20) and a 72-64 home win over Wake Forest on Sunday (Feb. 23). The Hurricanes forced 27 Wake Forest turnovers, including 19 steals–the most of any ACC team in conference play this season. Seven different Miami players recorded a steal in the game and Adrienne Motley and Maria Brown both had four apiece.
Virginia is coming off a pair of tough losses against two ranked teams, falling to No. 11 UNC and No. 14 NC State. In Sunday’s 68-66 game against the Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C., Virginia used a 17-2 run in the second half to erase a 10-point first-half deficit, taking a 61-52 lead with 6:53 remaining. After NC State tied the game on a three-pointer from Miah Spencer with 1:28 remaining, the game went through six lead changes with a three-pointer from the Wolfpack’s Kody Burke with 11 seconds remaining becoming the deciding basket.
Sophomore guard Faith Randolph (Derwood, Md.) finished the game with 15 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists. Against UNC and NC State, Randolph scored a combined 39 points, going 10-of-11 from the free throw line, with four steals and eight rebounds. Randolph, who has only started four games this season, is averaging 12.8 points per game, the top scoring average of a non-starter in the ACC this season.
Gerson scored a combined 23 points with 13 rebounds, 7 steals and four assists in the two games last week. Gerson has made at least one three-pointer in each of the last 11 games and in the last three games is 7-of-13 from three-point range. Gerson, who leads the ACC in steals at 2.7 per game, has had at least one steal in each of the last 10 games and has had four or more steals in half of those contests.
Franklin has scored in double-digits in each of the last 10 games, beginning with an 18-point performance against Florida State and including scoring 15 points at NC State. Franklin has hit at least one three-pointer in each of the last six games, making more than one trey in five of those contests including going 2-of-3 at NC State.
Freshman guard Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.) was 4-of-5 shooting at NC State, scoring eight points. In the last four games, Mason is averaging 7.0 points per game, more than double her season average.
The Cavaliers close out the regular season at Florida State (18-9, 6-8) on Sunday, March 2 at 12:30 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN-U. Virginia defeated then-ranked No. 17 Florida State 85-68 on Jan. 19 in Charlottesville.

Single-game ticket prices for all games are $10 for Reserved seating, $8 for adult General Admission and $6 for youth (18 & under), senior (60 & over) and UVa faculty/staff General Admission. Family Packages are available for $11 each and include a reserved ticket and a concessions voucher valued at $8. A minimum of four tickets must be purchased to receive package pricing.
