Virginia in Third Place After Two Days of ACCs

GREENSBORO, N.C.—The Virginia men’s swimming and diving team earned two bronze medals on the second day of the ACC Championship Thursday (Feb. 27) at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
After two days, the Cavaliers are in third place with 338 points, behind NC State (415) and Virginia Tech (411). North Carolina is in fourth with 337.5 points, followed by Notre Dame (325), Florida State (282), Georgia Tech (201), Duke (193.5), Pittsburgh (178), Boston College (123) and Miami (74).
In the 200 free relay, the team of freshman Matt Lockman (Charlottesville, Va.) and juniors Charlie Rommel (East Amherst, N.Y.), Jake Pearce (Tulsa, Okla.) and Kyle Dudzinski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned bronze in a time of 1:18.39, the fourth-fastest time in school history. Lockman’s lead-off 50 time of 20.13 ranks 10th on UVa’s all-time list.
Senior Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) finished third in the 500 free in 4:20.34, while fellow senior Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) was eighth in 4:23.43. In the consolation final, senior Jonathan Buerger (Wexford, Pa.) placed sixth for 14th overall in 4:24.59.
In the 200 IM, sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) placed sixth in a time of 1:45.44. His prelim time of 1:44.74 ranks fourth on UVa’s all-time list. Junior David Ingraham (Spartanburg, S.C.) won the consolation final in 1:44.95, ranking fifth on the all-time list for Virginia. Senior Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt.) placed sixth in the consolation final in 1:46.50.
In the final event of the evening, Pearce placed fifth in the consolation final in a time of 20.04. His prelim time of 20.00 ranks in a tie for seventh on UVa’s all-time list.
The action continues Friday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m. of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay.
