CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia softball team opens its 2014 home schedule this weekend when it hosts No. 9 Florida State, March 8-9, at The Park. First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Sunday’s single game is set for an 11 a.m. start.

Last time out, the Cavaliers (2-14, 0-3 ACC) dropped a three-game series, 3-0, to NC State last weekend in Raleigh, N.C. Freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) threw her first collegiate complete game in the second game of the series, while fellow freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) hit the first home run of her collegiate career in the series finale. Senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) leads the team with a .382 batting average.

The Seminoles come into Charlottesville with an 18-2 record after winning four of five games at the Easton Crimson Classic last weekend in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Maddie O’Brien leads FSU with a .429 batting average, eight home runs and 31 RBI. Lacey Waldrop is 10-2 on the season with a 0.59 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 71.0 innings, while Jessica Burroughs is 8-0 with a 1.35 ERA.

Last season, Florida State swept the season series, 3-0, in Tallahassee, Fla. The first game went to extra innings before the Seminoles were victorious, 3-2, in eight innings. FSU claimed the next two games, 10-2, and 2-0.

Next up, the Cavaliers travel to Atlanta, Ga., to face Georgia Tech in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
