CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team dropped a doubleheader to George Mason, 17-6 and 15-5, Thursday afternoon (March 27) at The Park. The Cavaliers fell to 4-24 on the season, while the Patriots improved to 10-13.

In the first game, senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) and junior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) each had three RBI, but GMU had 18 hits in a 17-6 win.

In the fourth inning, Harris hit a two-run single before Bowdren launched a three-run home run to right-center field, her fourth of the season. Harris added an RBI single in the sixth.

Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) took the loss, while Christina Gabriele (2-4) picked up the win for the Patriots, allowing one run in 3.1 innings of relief.

Brooke Blankenship had five RBI, including a three-run home run, to lead GMU, while Mary O’Connor had four hits.

In the second game, Blankenship hit two more home runs and drove in five in the Patriots’ 15-5 win.

Freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) drove in classmate Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) in the first and scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) in the third.

Junior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) hit her third home run of the season in the sixth, driving in Bowdren and Harris to close the GMU lead to 10-5.

Chapdelaine (4-22) took the loss after allowing four in the first, while Bowdren came on in relief with no outs in the first and pitched the rest of the game with two strikeouts.

The Cavaliers travel to ACC-newcomer Pittsburgh for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday (March 29-30). Saturday’s doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. start, while Sunday’s game is scheduled for noon.
