FARMVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team dropped a pair of games at Longwood, 6-4 and 8-4, Wednesday afternoon (April 2) at Lancer Field. The Cavaliers fell to 4-29 on the season, while the Lancers improved to 22-7.
With the score tied at four in the first game, Longwood scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly and went on to win, 6-4.
The Cavaliers took advantage of two Lancer errors in the third inning to score three and tie the game. Junior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) singled home fellow junior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) to score the first run and senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Velk came home on a grounder by freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) that was thrown away by Longwood.
In the fourth, senior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) doubled to lead off and moved to third on a groundout by Harris. Johnson scored on a wild pitch to give UVa a 4-3 lead.
Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) struck out a career-high five batters in six inning of work in the loss. Elizabeth McCarthy allowed four runs (one earned) in 3.1 inning of work, while Libby Morris (11-4) worked 3.2 scoreless innings of relief for the win.
In the second game, the Lancers used a five-run second inning to break open the game en route to an 8-4 win.
In the third, Bowdren walked and came around to score on a single by Mayer for the Cavaliers only run. After freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) singled and Johnson reached on an error in the fourth, Bowdren hit the 20th home run of her career, closing the gap to 8-4.
Chapdelaine (4-25) allowed eight runs (six earned) with three strikeouts in the complete-game loss. Morris pitched a complete game for the win for Longwood, allowing four runs (one earned).
The Cavaliers return to action this weekend when they host North Carolina Saturday and Sunday (April 5-6). Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and Sunday’s first pitch is slated for noon.
