Tallahassee, Fla. – The 20th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team is in fifth place entering Saturday’s final round of competition at the NCAA East Regional taking place in Tallahassee, Fla. The top eight teams from the 24-team field advance to the NCAA Championships.

Virginia shot 4-over 292 during Friday’s play for a 36-hole total of 1-under 575. No. 12 Vanderbilt leads the field at 10-under 566 while No. 2 Duke is second at 572. No. 34 Tulane is tied with No. 5 South Carolina for third place at 574, one stroke ahead of the Cavaliers.

Junior Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.) led the Cavaliers during the second round by shooting 1-under 71. She was one of just 12 players in the field to break par in the windy conditions. Mao improved to 27th place with a two-day total of 1-under 143. Sophomore Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) enters the final round with UVa’s best score. She posted a 72 Friday to move into eighth place at 142.

Elizabeth Brightwell (Nellysford, Va.) and Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) are tied for 27th place at 1-over 145. Brightwell shot 74 during the second round while Diaz-Yi finished with a 75. Senior Portland Rosen (Sugar Land, Texas) is in 109th place at 157.

In the race for medalist honors, Stanford’s Mariah Stackhouse moved into first place with a two-day total of 5-under 139. Duke’s Celine Boutier and Sandy Choi are tied for second at 140.

Virginia will start its final round Saturday at 8:51 a.m. from the No. 10 tee. The Cavaliers will be paired with South Carolina and Stanford. According to tournament results through the first 36 holes, seven of the toughest playing holes at the SouthWood Golf Club are on the back nine.
