Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 11 Virginia men’s golf team opens play at the NCAA Regional in Columbia, Mo., Thursday, May 15. The 54-hole event runs through Saturday at the par-72, 7,141-yard Club at Old Hawthorne. Virginia is the No. 2 seed in the 14-team field. The top five finishers from the six NCAA regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

The regional berth marks the 18th time since 1990 the Cavaliers have competed in postseason play. Virginia is looking to advance to the NCAA Championships for the 14th time in its history. Last year the Cavaliers were sixth at a regional site in Columbus, Ohio and did not advance to the NCAA Championships. Denny McCarthy tied for second at the regional to receive an at-large berth to the NCAAs as an individual competitor.

McCarthy is joined in this year’s regional lineup by senior David Pastore, junior Ji Soo Park and freshmen Derek Bard and Jimmy Stanger.

The Cavaliers are paired with No. 1 seed Oklahoma State and No. 3 seed LSU and will start play Thursday at 8 a.m. from the first tee.

The field for the Columbia regional includes (listed by seed): 1. Oklahoma State, 2. Virginia, 3. LSU, 4. Arkansas, 5. Arizona State, 6. Iowa, 7. San Diego State, 8. Missouri, 9. Iowa State, 10. Middle Tennessee State, 11. Ohio State, 12. Denver, 13. Loyola (MD), 14. Bryant

Virginia is one of six ACC schools participating in this year’s championship. The others are: Georgia Tech (Raleigh), Florida State (Raleigh), Wake Forest (Raleigh), Virginia Tech (Auburn) and Clemson (Sugar Grove).
