OMAHA, Neb. – The festivities for the 2014 College World Series fully kicked off on Friday as Virginia participated in a busy day of activities, including practice at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, media interviews, autographs and the CWS Opening Ceremonies.

Virginia has yet another day to wait until it starts play in the College World Series. UVa does not play on Saturday and will open up against Ole Miss at 8 p.m. ET Sunday on ESPN2.

UVa players and coaches gathered at the famed Road to Omaha statue to begin their busy day, taking a team picture in front of TD Ameritrade Park. The Cavaliers then took the field for the first time, getting a crisp hour of practice. After a brief session with the media, the team signed autographs for a half hour.

The Cavaliers returned to the park later in the evening for a team barbecue dinner before the culmination of the day, the CWS Opening Ceremonies, which included the Olympic-style introduction of the eight teams, comments from featured speaker Kyle Peterson, the unveiling of the team flags by the U.S. Army Parachute Team and a fantastic fireworks display. UVa pitcher Whit Mayberry also was honored for having the highest grade-point average on the team.
