IRVINE, Calif.–Virginia swimmers completed action at the Phillips 66 National Championships Sunday (Aug. 10) at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.

Rising sophomore Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished in the top-six in all four events she competed in, including third-place finishes in the 200m and 400m free. She also placed fifth in the 1,500m free and sixth in the 800m free. With her third-place finish in the 200m free, she qualified for the United States team that will compete at the Pan Pacific Championships in Gold Coast, Australia, Aug. 21-25. Smith will be part of the 4x200m free relay.

Class of 2011 graduate Matt McLean continued to swim well after winning the national title in the 200m free on Thursday, taking second place in both the 400m free and the 800m free. With his efforts, McLean will swim the 200m free, 400m free and 4x200m free relay at the Pan Pacific Championships.

Rising junior Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) qualified for two A finals, placing in a tie for sixth in the 50m back and eighth in the 200m back. She also swam in the B final of the 100m back, finishing 16th overall.

Rising senior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) made it back in the 200m back, placing sixth in the B final for a 14th-place mark overall, while rising sophomore Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) qualified for the B final in the 200m IM and placed 11th overall.

Rising junior Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) swam in the B final of the 50m and 100m back events and finished 15th and 13th, respectively.

Incoming freshman Anthony Marcantonio (Centerville, Mass.) placed 25th overall in the 200m IM and qualified for the 18-and-under C final, in which he finished fifth.
