Sept. 5, 2014 Sugar Grove, Ill. – The 13th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team finished the opening round of play at the Northern Intercollegiate in seventh place with a score of 9-over 297. Winthrop leads the 13-team field at 3-under 285 after the first day of play at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Senior Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) led the Cavaliers by shooting 1-over 73. Freshman Austen Truslow (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) are tied for 24th at 2-over 74 while sophomore Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) is 37th at 76 and first year Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) is 62nd after shooting 80.

Virginia is without senior All-American Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) in its lineup. He is in Japan preparing for the World Amateur Team Championships.

Winthrop’s Zach Seabolt and Sam Whitehead led the field in stroke play. Seabolt shot 6-under 66 and Whitehead finished at 3-under 69.

Virginia will start its second round at 8:40 a.m. from the 10th tee. The Cavaliers will be paired with Marquette and UCF. Live scoring is online at www.birdiefire.com.

The tournament was delayed during the afternoon due to weather. The second round of the tournament will be held Saturday and the final round is slated for Sunday.
