PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Virginia juniors Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) advanced to the round of 16 in qualifying doubles action on Tuesday (Sept. 30) at the 2014 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

No. 22 Elbaba and Nauta defeated Florida’s Brooke Austin and Brianna Morgan 7-6(7), 6-4 in the opening round of 32. Elbaba and Nauta face Texas A&M’s Saska Gavriloska and former Cavalier Rachel Pierson in the round of 16 on Wednesday (Oct. 1). Elbaba and Nauta need two wins tomorrow to move into the main draw.

Virginia junior Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and sophomore Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) were eliminated from the doubles tournament following their 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 loss to UCLA’s No. 56 Chanelle Van Nguyen and Terri Fleming in the round of 32.

No. 32 Nauta posted a 1-1 mark in qualifying singles action. Nauta recorded a 7-5, 6-2 win over No. 75 Elianne Douglas-Miron of Washington in the opening round of 64 before being eliminated 7-6(6), 6-4 by No. 54 Pierson in the round of 32.

Main draw action is set to start Thursday, Oct. 2. Reigning NCAA singles champion Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Elbaba, who finished runner-up to Florida’s Lauren Embree at the 2012 All-American, are two of 24 players in the main draw.

Singles semifinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 6-9 in Flushing, NY.
