Oct. 9, 2014 Charlottesville, Va. – The 21st-ranked Virginia men’s golf team returns to action this weekend at the 2014 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate tournament. The event will take place at the par-72, 7,147 yard Blackthorn Club in Johnson City, Tenn. The three-day tournament gets underway Friday morning at 8 a.m., while Saturday’s second round will also start at 8 a.m. Sunday’s tee times and pairings will be released at the conclusion of Saturday’s round.

Virginia enters the event as the defending champions. Last year the Cavaliers posted the event’s second-lowest team score at 22-under-par 842. The Cavaliers’ second-round score of 16-under-par 272 was the lowest single-round total put up in tournament history. Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) led UVa with a second-place finish at 11-under 205.

This year’s tournament features five teams ranked in the top-35 in the current Golfweek rankings. In addition, six are ranked in the top-50, while nine teams are ranked in the top-80.

Joining the host Bucs (No. 31) and UVa in the field are Wake Forest (No. 12), Virginia Tech (No. 26), NC State (No. 35), Penn State (No. 45), Kent State (No. 60), Tennessee (No. 71), Army (No. 80), Villanova, Coastal Carolina, Furman, Memphis, Missouri, and UNC Wilmington.

Virginia’s lineup will include senior Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.), sophomores Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.), junior Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.) and freshman Austen Truslow (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.). Freshman Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) will compete as an individual.

McLaughlin leads the Cavaliers with a 70.33 stroke average while Bard is second at 71.11 and McCarthy is third at 71.67.

The Cavaliers will tee off at 9:40 a.m. and are paired with East Tennessee State and Wake Forest during the opening round.
