CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis program went 6-0 in singles action and 5-0 in doubles play to highlight Friday (Oct. 10) competition at the UVa Fall Invite. Rain in the Charlottesville area moved play indoors to Boar’s Head Sports Club.
The UVa tandems of Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) and Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) and Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) each went 2-0, while Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) won their only match.
In the Orange doubles flight, Elbaba and Morton defeated Arkansas’ Makenzie Craft and Nastassia Rubel 8-0 and South Carolina’s Brigit Folland and Meghan Blevins 8-7(5). Nauta and Epstein posted an 8-5 win over Northwestern’s Alicia Barnett and Manon Peri to advance to tomorrow’s final against Elbaba and Morton.
In the Blue doubles flight, Faure and Mercer defeated Marshall’s Maddie Silver and Marija Bogicevic 8-1 and Northwestern’s Lok Sze Leung and Rheeya Doshi 8-4. Faure and Mercer face Marshall’s Anna Pomyatinskaya and Derya Turhan in tomorrow’s final.
No. 5 Elbaba, No. 32 Nauta, No. 122 Epstein, Morton, Mercer and Faure each posted singles victories. In the Orange singles flight, Elbaba beat Northwestern’s Brooke Rischbieth 6-3, 6-2 and Nauta defeated Marshall’s Turhan 6-3, 6-2. Epstein topped Northwestern’s Peri 6-1, 6-3 and Morton beat No. 114 Folland of South Carolina 6-3, 6-3. In the Blue singles flight, Faure beat South Carolina’s Natalie Looney 7-6, 6-4 and Mercer posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Old Dominion’s Ivana Vukovic.
Arkansas, Marshall, Maryland, Northwestern, Old Dominion and South Carolina are competing with host Virginia at this year’s three-day event. The tournament consists of a pair of 16-player singles draws and two eight-team doubles draws. Saturday’s play, which will begins indoors at 9 a.m., features two rounds of singles and one round of doubles. Sunday’s play will feature the final round of singles.
