Elbaba and Nauta Lead Cavaliers at UVa Fall Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia juniors Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) each posted a pair of singles wins during Saturday (Oct. 11) action at the UVa Fall Invite at Boar’s Head Sports Club.
Elbaba and Nauta will meet in tomorrow’s Orange singles flight final after advancing through the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds today. No. 5 Elbaba defeated Old Dominion’s Borislava Botusharova 6-2, 6-3 and Arkansas’ No. 121 Shannon Hudson 6-1, 6-0, while No. 32 Nauta defeated Northwestern’s Alex Chatt 6-0, 6-3 and No. 123 Alicia Barnett 6-2, 7-6(3).
UVa junior Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) went 1-1 in Orange singles flight action, losing 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Barnett before rebounding with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Chatt in consolation play. No. 122 Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) retired against Hudson after splitting the first two sets.
In the Blue singles flight, freshman Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) went 1-1 and sophomore Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) went 0-2. Mercer lost 6-4, 7-6 to Maryland’s Kristina Hovsepyan in the semifinals, but beat Old Dominion’s Faith Atiso 6-1, 6-0 in consolation action. Faure lost 6-1, 6-3 to Northwestern’s Lok Sze Leung and 6-4, 6-3 to Marshall’s Maddie Silver.
Arkansas, Marshall, Maryland, Northwestern, Old Dominion and South Carolina are competing with host Virginia at this year’s three-day event. The tournament concludes tomorrow outdoors at Snyder Tennis Center with the final round of doubles beginning at 10 a.m. Elbaba and Morton will meet Nauta and Epstein in the Orange doubles final, while Faure and Mercer face Marshall’s Anna Pomyatinskaya and Derya Turhan in Blue doubles final. The final round of singles will begin at approximately 11:15 a.m.
