MADISON, Wis. – The No. 10 Virginia women’s cross country team finished in a ninth-place tie at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational Friday at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The meet featured 22 of the top 30 teams in the nation, including six of the top 10.

Second-ranked Michigan State won the meet with 87 points, followed by fifth-ranked Arkansas with 191 points and eighth-ranked Iowa State with 213 points. The host, No. 15 Wisconsin, was fourth with 227 points and No. 20 West Virginia was fifth with 245 points. The top 10 rounded out with No. 11 New Mexico (261 pts), No. 6 Stanford (283 pts), No. 9 Florida State (309 pts) and the Cavaliers and No. 27 Vanderbilt tying for ninth with 367 points.

“It was a good day and we leave here with a lot of positives,” said women’s head coach Todd Morgan. “There are a lot of things we feel good about as we head into the ACC meet. We had a few people who didn’t have the full three weeks of training to get ready for this meet, but they still came out and had a solid performance. We feel like we have a lot left to show and we are excited as the big part of the season is coming up.”

Virginia was led by graduate student Morgan Kelly (San Francisco, Calif.), who crossed the line in 21st place in a time of 20:25. Sophomore Sarah Fakler (Phoenix, Ariz.) was 36th in a time of 20:34 and graduate student Iona Lake (Norwich, England) was 48th in a time of 20:44. Senior Kathleen Stevens (Blacksburg, Va.) and first-year Laura Pierce (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring five in 112th and 150th place, respectively.

The Virginia men and women will return to action on Oct. 31 when they host the ACC Championships at Panorama Farms. It will be the third time the course has hosted the conference meet. The women’s race will begin at 10 a.m., with the men following at 10:45 a.m. Both races will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
