Virginia Sweeps Singles & Doubles Titles at Atlantic Regional

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis team swept the singles and doubles titles at the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional on Tuesday (Oct. 21) at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
Junior Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) claimed the singles crown and junior Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) and freshman Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) captured the doubles championship.
No. 1 seed Nauta defeated No. 2 seed Ilinca Stoica of Virginia Tech 7-6(3), 6-2 to win the singles title. Nauta rolled to the championship by defeating UMBC’s Mariami Dolashvilli (6-3, 6-2), Navy’s Amanda Keller (6-0, 6-1), Marshall’s Derya Turhan (6-0, 6-1), William & Mary’s Leeza Nemchinov (6-2, 7-5), Old Dominion’s Borislava Botusharova (5-7, 6-2, 6-3) and Stoica. Nauta has posted a 13-3 record this fall and is ranked No. 32 in the ITA preseason singles rankings.
Mercer and Morton defeated UVa teammates Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and Nauta 7-6, 2-6 and 11-9 in the third set tiebreaker to earn the doubles championship. The UVa doubles tandems met in the finals after securing semifinal victories earlier today. Nauta and Epstein defeated VCU’s Salome Kvitashvilli and Olga Barscheheuskaya 6-1, 7-6(7) and Mercer and Morton topped Virginia Tech’s Raluca Mita and Stoica 6-3, 6-3.
The UVa title victories secured automatic singles and doubles berths at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, held Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Virginia’s Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) await possible at-large singles and doubles berths to the national indoor championships, while Epstein and Nauta await a possible doubles berth.
