Wahoo Central Moderator: Good afternoon and welcome to today’s live Wahoo Central chat with Max Valles. We are about to get started. |
Haley (Charlottesville): What was challenging about playing as a true freshman? What do you feel like you learned from that experience? |
Max Valles: What was challenging was learning the system and catching up to the speed of college football. I had to also get accustom to the physical nature of college football.
What I have learned is to go hard every single play. Never take a play off. Get better as the year goes on. Be better at the end of the season than you were at the start.
Tyler Charlottesville: Whats your favorite holiday? |
Max Valles: Christmas is my favorite holiday. I set up very early. My mom is bringing my mini Christmas tree and lights down this weekend. I celebrate very early and don’t take down my decorations until February. I get the most out of it. |
Chris (Glen Allen): What can the defense do to get off the field against a hot offense in North Carolina? |
Max Valles: The biggest thing is to make our tackles and not miss any. We can’t miss any opportunities for interceptions or fumbles. If the ball is touching our hands, we need to come away with it. We need to contain the quarterback because he is a very good athlete and can kill you in open space. |
Aly (Virginia beach): What’s your favorite color? |
Max Valles: Orange and Blue of course. But I do lean toward blue. |
Will Charlottesville: Which three teammates would you most like to have on a deserted island? |
Christina: Max, I know you support a lot of teams here at the University. If you could attend just one more home game this year (not counting football), what would it be? |
Max Valles: I can’t attend just one more – we have an entire basketball season that has not started yet. If we are talking fall sports, I love watching our men’s and women’s soccer teams playing. |
Matt(Roanoke): After losing to Duke on the road after coming off a bye week, how hungry is the team to get a win against rival UNC, and particularly the defense after not getting a turnover against Duke? |
Max Valles: Win or lose we are always hungry for the next game. Each ACC game is very important and Saturday is another opportunity to get an ACC win. We are always hungry to force turnovers. |
Melissa (Poway): In high school you played offense and defense. What NFL players did you look up to when you were younger? |
Max Valles: On offense I always like Terrell Owens as a kid. On defense, my dad always put on Lawrence Taylor film for me to watch as a kid. This was way before defensive line was every an option for me to play. |
Alison (Alexandria): What do you do when you are not playing football? |
Max Valles: When I am not playing football, school is my first priority. I enjoy hanging out with my girlfriend and teammates. I like watching documentaries. |
Erin (Virginia Beach): Do you have a favorite defensive memory or game? Any particular big stops that stick out in your mind? |
Max Valles: For now, both games against Pitt stick out. At Pitt last year was my first start. I had few sacks and had a blast. This year against Pitt I got my first interception and ran it back for a touchdown. Those games stick out in my mind. |
Alyson (Virginia Beach): How did it feel to score the touchdown from the interception during the Pitt game? |
Max Valles: It was a great feeling. Getting to the end zone and doing my Superman celebration in front of the student section was tremendous. |
Rachel (Vienna): Did you have any embarrassing “first year moments” while adjusting to the university? |
Max Valles: I have missed the bus to practice in the morning and had to run to McCue to make the team meeting. That happened once last year. |
Amanda (Charlotte): What is your favorite line from a movie? |
Max Valles: “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.”
If you don’t know that, I will let you look that line up! Good movie.
Kendall (Suffolk): Do you have any embarrassing nicknames? |
Max Valles: Cupcake. I once made the mistake of telling some friends. Now they call me cupcake. |
Sarah (Indiana): What is your favorite candy? |
Stacey (Fairfax): You are relatively active on twitter.. Do you enjoy interacting with fans? Do you feel like you have your own twitter personality? |
Max Valles: I am the same on Twitter as I am in person. But I do enjoy talking with the fans that tweet me. |
John (Richmond): Are you athletically gifted in sports other than football? Can you throw down a mean dunk or play a solid round of 18 holes? |
Max Valles: I am really good at basketball. I can do a 360 dunk, I can put the ball through my legs and dunk. I love driving the golf ball. Maybe play only 9 holes though. I was a good high school baseball player too. I am thinking I would like to take up badminton. |
Josh: If you could have one super power, what would it be? Good luck on Saturday! |
Max Valles: I wish I could have super speed. You can never catch me and you can never run away from me. |
Jackie (Arlington): If you could give any advice to any young athletes, what would it be? |
Max Valles: My advice to young athletes. Your sport isn’t going to last forever. Take care of your studies, stay in school and get it done right the first time so you don’t have to come back to it later in life. |
Wahoo Central Moderator: That is all we have time for today. A very big thank you to Max Valles for joining us today. Thank you fans for all your questions.
We will see you all out at Scott Stadium on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Go Hoos!
