Virginia Comes From Behind to Defeat NC State, 3-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The Virginia volleyball team came from behind to defeat NC State, 25-20, 24-26, 23-25, 25-12 and 15-11, Friday evening (Oct. 24) at Memorial Gymnasium. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 12-9 (5-3 ACC) on the season, while the Wolfpack fell to 12-8 (1-7 ACC).
The two teams were tied six times in the fifth set, before the Cavaliers pulled away, finishing the match on a 4-1 run.
Sophomore Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) hit .327 with a match-high 23 kills, while fellow sophomore Jasmine Burton (West Hills, Calif.) hit .346 with 11 kills. Senior Tori Janowski added a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs.
Junior Lauren Fuller dished out 57 assists, sophomore Lexi Riccolo added 18 digs and senior Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) stuffed a team-high six blocks.
In the first set, the Cavaliers hit .379, while holding the Wolfpack to a .143 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-20 win. In the second set, both teams struggled offensively, as UVa hit .049 to NC State’s .037.
The Cavaliers fought off two set points to tie the frame at 24-24, but the Wolfpack earned the next two points to win, 26-24. The third set was a tight frame as well, with Virginia again fighting off two set points before NC State prevailed, 25-23.
Down 6-4 in the fourth set, the Cavaliers went a 15-3 run and went on to win, 25-12, to force the fifth and decisive set.
Kaitlyn Kearney earned 17 kills and 10 blocks to lead NC State.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday (Oct. 25) when they host Notre Dame at 7 p.m. The first 150 fans in attendance will receive Virginia volleyball t-shirts and fans attending the UVa football game against North Carolina can bring their tickets and receive free admission to the volleyball match against Notre Dame (based on availability).
