Recap | Box Score

Head Coach Joanne Boyle

Opening Statement:
“It was an exciting game and we are proud of the team. Obviously Ohio State is a good team, but I was proud of how we played both sides of the floor. Not every minute, but when it really counted. I thought we did a great job of getting stops, scoring and making free throws, which is what the game is about.”

On Defense
“Down the stretch I thought it was great. I thought we really locked in and sat guard. It is hard to guard that all night. I thought we got lazy at times, we didn’t sprint back in transitions and we got caught in mismatches. Obviously early in the season we have a lot to work on and I thought switching it up with the zone would help.”

On Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell:
“She is a great player. You knew she was going to get hers. She took 27 shots and 12 threes. She had the green light and we knew it. We tried to get different players on her. Breyana was in foul trouble early, then I didn’t want to have Faith on her the whole game, but in the end I think Faith did a great job getting stops on her.”

On Breyana Mason:
“Anytime you get significant minutes as a freshman and then get a whole summer to work on things you become so much more comfortable. She is quiet but her game doesn’t have to be. She knows her role and she can step in and out of it, and we need that from her. We are encouraging her to be aggressive, like that. She really showed up tonight.”

Sophomore Guard Breyana Mason

On being more aggressive:
“I think the experience I got last year helped me and I felt more comfortable stepping into my role and playing with my teammates.”

On energy from the crowd:
“I have never heard the fans that loud before I couldn’t even hear us communicate on defense but it was a great turning point for us.”

Senior Center Sarah Imovbioh

On the crowd:
“The crowd got into it and we got hype. We just wanted it more. Before that we were thinking we needed to get stops and the offense would take care of itself and I think my team did a good job with that.”

On rebounding:
“I felt like the pack line helped me a lot tonight. When we went back to zone it put us in a position to rebound. Before the game Coach Boyle emphasized rebounding saying she doesn’t want rebounding to be a reason to lose games. Going into it I was saying I just wanted to clean the board tonight. The glass was open tonight. I didn’t know I had that many rebounds until coach told me.”

On teammate Breyana Mason:
“Going into the game coach told us how every single one of us matters and how we all need to step up. I feel like Breyana took up the challenge today. She knew she had to score today and she did a pretty good job of it. I am excited for her because it is a big turn around going into the season.”
