CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 16 Virginia wrestling team begins the 2015 portion of its schedule Thursday and Friday (Jan. 1 and 2) against a challenging field at the 2015 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle. Chattanooga again plays host to the event, which begins at 9 a.m. both days at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Noting the Southern Scuffle
The Southern Scuffle field once again is one of the best in the nation. Thirty-one teams will compete, including 13 from the latest NWCA Top 25 – Cornell (3), Penn State (4), Missouri (5), Oklahoma State (8), Pitt (9), Lehigh (11), Nebraska (12), Iowa State (14), Michigan (15), Virginia (16), Wyoming (21), NC State (22) and Bucknell (25)

The field features 29 All-Americans, three NCAA Champions and four former NCAA runners-up, while 95 are currently ranked and 45 are ranked in the top 10.

Virginia joins Appalachian State, Duke, NC State, North Carolina and The Citadel and Virginia as the only teams that have competed in the Southern Scuffle every year since it began in 2003.

The Latest on the Cavaliers
Seven Cavaliers are seeded in the field. Sulzer is the No. 2 seed at 165 pounds; top-ranked Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State holds the No. 1 seed at 165.

Three Cavaliers own No. 4 seeds – DiCamillo (133), Spisak (141) and Sako (149). Nye is the No. 9 seed in a stacked field at 197, while James Suvak is seeded 11th at 184 and Ethan Hayes 12th at heavyweight.

Virginia took sixth place last year at the Scuffle, with Spisak earning runner-up honors at 141 and Sulzer placing third at 165.

Virginia returns to dual competition Jan. 9-10 at the Virginia Duals, hosted at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. Brackets for the tournament will be announced Monday.
