CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 10 Virginia earned a 4-2 win over No. 9 Georgia in women’s tennis action on Monday (Feb. 2) at Boar’s Head Sports Club.
The Cavaliers improved to 4-1 with the win, while Georgia fell to 3-1. Virginia recovered from being swept in doubles to log four singles victories from No. 42 Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), No. 16 Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.)
Epstein dispatched No. 91 Hannah King, 6-3, 6-1, to give Virginia its first point. Nauta put Virginia ahead with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court three followed by Morton defeating No. 83 Silvia Garcia 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) at court four. Georgia kept the match alive when No. 19 Lauren Herring upset No. 1 Julia Elbaba 7-5, 6-4 on court one, but Collins sealed the victory with a 7-5 win in the third set on court two, downing Ellen Perez 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Georgia opened the day sweeping the doubles matches with Herring/Perez defeating No. 22 Elbaba/Nauta 6-3, Garcia/Shaffer winning 6-3 over No. 11 Cassie Mercer/Morton and Caroline Brinson/Hannah King downing Collins/Epstein 6-2.
This weekend, Virginia hosts the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 6-9 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
