Orlando, Fla. – The 16th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team is in third place following the first 18 holes of play at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla. Virginia shot 6-under 282 during the opening round and trails tournament leader Vanderbilt by five shots. Iowa State is in second place, one stroke ahead of the Cavaliers, in the 18-team field.

UVa’s opening round score was the third-best 18-hole score in the program’s history.

Junior Elizabeth Szokol led Virginia by shooting 4-under 68. She finished the first day in third place, two shots behind tournament-leading Kendall Martindale of Vanderbilt.

Lauren Diaz-Yi was in 10th place after posting a 2-under 70. Lauren Coughlin was 15th at 71 and Briana Mao finished 31st with a 73. Maho Hayakawa was 56th after shooting 75. Alex Hershberger, playing as a non-scoring individual, was also tied for 31st at 73.

The second round of the tournament takes place Monday and the final round will be played Tuesday.
