Tallahassee, Fla. – The 17th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team shot 12-over 300 and ended the first day of play at the Florida State Match-Up Tournament tied for seventh place in the Cavaliers’ second spring tournament. The 12-team field is competing at the Southwood Golf Course in Tallahassee, Fla.
Second-ranked South Carolina owns the first-round lead at 4-over 292. Mississippi State, ranked ninth, is in second place at 296.
Virginia junior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) led the team by shooting 1-under 71 and is tied for second place. Texas A&M’s Bianca Fabrizio leads the field at 3-under 69.
UVa’s Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.) is in sixth place after shooting 1-over 73. Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) is 22nd with a 75 while Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) is in 60th place at 81. Alex Hershberger (Basking Ridge, N.J.) is 64th at 86. Two Cavaliers competing as individuals, Sarah Kolodzik (Bellbrook, Ohio) and Maho Hayakawa (Lake Mary, Fla.), are tied for 44th at 6-over 78.
In addition to traditional collegiate scoring, the tournament features a unique team scoring component. The participating teams are paired in twosomes during the first two rounds and play in threesomes in the final round. The twosomes consist of partners playing together. The match-up portion of the tournament is determined by taking the best four scores from each of the partners and the lowest scores to make up the match-up partner total.
At the end of the tournament, the partners with the lowest score will win the Match-Up championship. The team and individual champions will also be crowned.
The event runs through Sunday.
