Tallahassee, Fla. – The 17th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team wrapped up a successful week in the Sunshine State by finishing second at the Florida State Match-Up Tournament. The Cavaliers opened the week by winning the UCF Challenge in Orlando in the team’s first event of the spring.

At the FSU Match-Up, Virginia tied with ninth-ranked Mississippi State at 19-over 883. The Cavaliers shot 1-over 289 during Sunday’s final round. Furman used a strong final day to capture the team crown. The 26th-ranked Paladins shot 7-under 281 to win by seven shots. South Carolina, ranked second, was fourth at 884.

Junior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) led the Cavaliers with a fifth-place finish. She shot even par 72 during the final round to finish the 54-hole event at 1-over 217. It was her second top-five finish of the season.

Junior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) was 14th overall at 220 while senior Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.) was one stroke behind her in 17th place. Coughlin shot 74 on Sunday while Mao finished her final 18 holes with a 73.

Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) had the team’s best final round score, shooting 2-under 70, to improve to 23rd at 225. Alex Hershberger (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was 63rd at 243. She posted a final round score of 80.

Virginia had two freshmen competing as individual in stroke play. Maho Hayakawa (Lake Mary, Fla.) was 46th at 231 and Sarah Kolodzik (Bellbrook, Ohio) placed 51st at 233.

Texas A&M’s Bianca Fabrizio tied Furman’s Taylor Totland for first place at 2-under 214. Fabrizio took medalist honors after winning a playoff that lasted two holes.

The Cavaliers return to action March 6 when they compete in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
