CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 16 Miami defeated No. 8 Virginia 5-2 in ACC women’s tennis action on Friday (March 27) at Boar’s Head Sports Club.

Virginia (12-4, 5-2 ACC) received singles wins from Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) in the loss. Miami improved to 11-3 and remained unbeaten in ACC play at 7-0.

In doubles, the 27th-ranked tandem of Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) and Morton beat Sinead Lohan and Stephanie Wagner 8-5 on court two. Miami then rallied with identical 8-5 wins on courts one and three. The 29th-ranked tandem of Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno topped Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) 8-5 on court one. The Hurricanes clinched the point on court three as Lina Lileikite and Wendy Zhang posted an 8-5 win over Elbaba and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.).

In singles, third-ranked Elbaba tied the score at 1-1 win an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win over sixth-ranked Wagner on court one. Miami gained a 2-1 lead when 36th-ranked Lohan rallied for a 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 win over 31st-ranked Collins on court two. Morton tied the score at 2-2 with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Lileikite on court four before Miami reclaimed the lead as 63rd-ranked Riobueno outlasted 34th-ranked Nauta 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 on court three. Miami clinched the win with Silvia Fuentes’ 6-3, 7-5 win over Epstein on court five. No. 96 Zhang added a 6-0, 7-6 win over Mercer on court six.

Virginia hosts Wake Forest on Sunday, March 29. First serve at Snyder Tennis Center is set for 11 a.m. Live video and scoring is available on VirginiaSports.com.

Sunday is also Cavman’s Crew Day at Snyder Tennis Center. There will be a face painter and balloon artist in attendance. After the women’s match (approximately 2 p.m.), the team will conduct a free post-match youth clinic. Children are encouraged to bring their own equipment, but racquets and balls will be provided for children who do not bring equipment. The Cavalier Band will also be in attendance.
