CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Virginia track and field rising junior Filip Mihaljevic captured gold in the men’s shot put at the European Athletics U23 Championships as current and former Cavaliers competed in multiple national and international competitions.

Mihaljevic, competing for Croatia, won the men’s shot put with a mark of 19.35m on his final attempt. It is Croatia’s first win in the event at the European U23 meet. Mihaljevic also qualified for the finals and finished fourth in the men’s discus with a distance of 58.76m on his third attempt.

Also at the European U23 meet, graduate student Iona Lake (Norwich, England) finished eighth in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase in 9:59.83. She qualified for the final with a time of 9:59.79. Including her personal-best time of 9:56.64 set at the British Milers’ Club Grand Prix of Watford in June, Lake has posted the top-three times of her career in her last three races.

Rising junior Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) earned three medals at the Canadian Track and Field Championships at Foote Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Young placed second in the men’s discus with a throw of 59.05m, third in the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 66.63m and third in the men’s shot put with a distance of 17.96m.

At the USATF Junior Championships, rising sophomore Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) earned silver in the men’s 10,000 meters in 31.32.88, to claim a spot on the U.S. squad for the 2015 Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships, to be held in Edmonton, Alberta, July 31-Aug. 2. Rising sophomore Jack Lint (Westerville, Ohio) took home bronze in the decathlon with 7,173 points, while fellow rising sophomore Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) finished ninth in the women’s pole vault with a height of 3.95m.

Former UVa standout Stephanie Garcia (Class of 2011) placed second in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase in a personal-best time of 9:23.48 to earn a spot on Team USA for the 2015 IAAF World Championships, to be held in Beijing, China, Aug. 22-30.
