Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia head men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent has been named Coach of the Year by the Virginia State Golf Coaches Association. In his 11th season at UVa, Sargent led the Cavaliers to an 18th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He was joined on the all-state team by four of his players.

Senior Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) and sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) were named first-team all-state selections and senior Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) and sophomore Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) were second-team picks.

Virginia finished sixth or better in all 10 of its events during the 2014-15 regular season, including a victory in the Northern Intercollegiate. The Cavaliers finished fourth in the ACC Championship and received an at-large selection to the NCAA Regional in San Diego, Calif. Their fifth-place finish advanced them to the NCAA Championships. Virginia was ranked No. 28 by Golfweek/Sagarin and No. 31 by Golfstat at the end of the season.

Bard posted a 71.45 stroke average and was named to the All-ACC Men’s Golf team and Division I All-East Region team. He won the U.S. Collegiate and had five top-10 finishes during the season. McCarthy was named to the PING All-America third team, in addition to earning All-ACC and All-East Region honors. He led the Cavaliers with a 70.94 stroke average and become the first player in Virginia history to earn All-ACC honors four times during their career.
