CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia field hockey team defeated Kent State in its first scrimmage of the preseason.

The Cavaliers held a 2-0 advantage through the end of regulation with junior Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) each scoring off feeds from junior Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England).

As time expired at the end of a bonus 20-minute third period, junior Megan Kelly (Phoenixville, Pa.) deflected in an initial shot from junior Emily Faught (Newton Square, Pa.) off a penalty corner. Kent State’s Madison Thompson scored 1:36 into a five-minute seven-on-seven-overtime fourth period, tapping in a shot off a pass from Alexis Madeira.

The two teams closed out the scrimmage with a modified shootout, with Virginia prevailing.

Cavalier goalies junior Rebecca Holden (Fishing Creek, N.J.) and redshirt freshmen Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) combined for three saves. Kent State’s Andrea Rinehart played the entire 95 minutes in goal, making eight saves, including five in the first 70 minutes.

The Cavaliers wrap up fall training camp next week with a scrimmage on Monday, August 24 at 11 a.m. against Quinnipiac. Virginia’s season-opener is set for Friday, August 28 when UVa hosts Drexel at 6 p.m. at Turf Field.
