Charleston, S.C. – The Virginia women’s golf team opened the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic by finishing the first round in sixth place, shooting 5-over 293. The tournament is taking place at at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C. Arkansas shot 6-under 282 to grab the opening-round lead.

UVa’s best score was posted by freshman Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.), who is competing as an individual and does not count toward the team scoring. She shot 2-under 70 in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield, Va.), also competing as an individual, shot even par 72 and is in 15th place.

Topping UVa’s team scoring was senior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) and junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) who both shot 1-under 71. They are tied for eighth place. Senior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) is in 47th place after shooting 75 while freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) is 59th with a 76. Fellow first-year player Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) is 97th after shooting 81.

The second round of the tournament will be played Monday and the final round takes place Tuesday.
