Franklin, Tenn. – Thanks to a fast start that included birdies on her first three holes, Virginia senior women’s golfer Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) leads the field at Vanderbilt’s Mason Rudolph Championship after the opening round. Coughlin finished her first tour of the Legends Golf Course at 6-under 66, the second lowest single-round score in her career.

Virginia is tied with Georgia for third place at 2-under 286. Those teams trail tournament-leading Alabama by four strokes. Northwestern is second at 5-under 283.

UVa senior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) is in 15th place at 1-under 71 while sophomore Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield, Va.) is 27th at 73. Freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) shot 76 during the opening round and classmate Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) finished the first day with a 77. Freshman Katharine Patrick, who is competing as an individual, is in 38th place at 74.

Coughlin made a total of seven birdies during her round. After her hot start she posted her only bogey on the fourth hole. She made the turn at 2-under before making birdie four times on her back nine.

The second round of the tournament will be played Saturday and the final round takes place Sunday. Virginia tees off at 8:55 a.m. Saturday and is paired with Louisville and Auburn.
