CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia women’s lacrosse head coach Julie Myers announced that fourth-years Mary Alati (Glen Ridge, N.J.) and Ella Cooper (Cockeysville, Md.) have been named captains for the 2016 season.

Mary Alati and Ella Cooper have been a huge part of our team over their first three years at Virginia,” Myers said. “All of the coaches are excited to push them to new heights as fourth-year captains and we know they will both be up for the challenge. Their hard work, smarts and leadership qualities will set a tone for all to follow.”

Alati appeared in all 40 games the last two season and started all 19 in 2015. The midfielder tallied 26 points with 17 goals and nine assists last season. She added 24 ground balls, 15 draw controls and eight caused turnovers. Alati was also named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll as a third-year.

Cooper played in 16 games with 12 starts in 2015. A mainstay on the defense, she picked up seven ground balls, three draw controls and caused four turnovers. Cooper is a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection.

Virginia begins its fall schedule this week when it hosts Richmond at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 30) at Turf Field.
