CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Emily Sonnett (Marietta, Ga.), a defender on the Virginia women’s soccer team, has been tabbed for the US Women’s National Team roster to compete in a pair of matches against Brazil on Wednesday, Oct. 21 and Sunday, Oct. 25. The matches are part of the Victory Tour for the Women’s World Cup champion team.

The USWNT will face Brazil in Seattle at CenturyLink Field in the first match before traveling to face the Brazilian team again in Orlando at the Citrus Bowl. The Oct. 21 match will be televised at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN and the Oct. 25 match will be at 2:30 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

“Our entire program is extremely excited for Emily and this opportunity,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “It is a testament to how hard she has worked over the years and the impact she has made at the collegiate and U-23 level. While we will miss her this next week we fully support her and have confidence that she will perform well in that environment. “

All 23 players from the Women’s World Cup winners will be at both venues in addition to NWSL MVP and leading scorer Crystal Dunn, who was added to the roster for the USA’s two September matches against Haiti and scored two goals with three assists in the two games.

Head coach Jill Ellis has called in seven additional players, including Sonnett, who will train with the U.S. team during the trip and are available to play in the matches.

This season, Sonnett has helped No. 2 Virginia post eight shutouts, including four in Atlantic Coast Conference play, on the way to a 10-1-1 record. The Cavaliers are 3-1-1 against nationally-ranked competition and have five matches remaining on the regular-season schedule. Sonnett was named to the preseason watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is presented annually to the top collegiate soccer player in the country.
