CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior goalkeeper Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday (Oct. 27).

Stearns helped the second-ranked Cavaliers to an undefeated week as Virginia posted a pair of 1-0 shutouts over Louisville and No. 1 Florida State to close out the home portion of the regular-season schedule.

The junior directed a back line that held the Cardinals to only six shots on the night, while holding the top-ranked Seminoles to only five shots on the afternoon. In the game against Louisville, Stearns turned away a dangerous direct kick that was on frame to keep the Cardinals off the board early.

With the wins, the Cavaliers improved to 7-1-0 in conference play and moved to the top of the ACC standings with two matches to play. Virginia also moved into the top spot in the national rankings heading into the final week of the regular season. Stearns and the Cavaliers have now posted nine shutout victories on the season, six in ACC play.

Virginia will travel to face NC State on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. The match is in place of the originally scheduled match that was postponed due to inclement weather throughout the South in the first weekend of October. The Cavaliers will then close out the regular season at Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
