Virginia Men Finish Third at ACC Championship

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-The No. 7 Virginia men’s cross country team placed third at the ACC Championship Friday morning (Oct. 30) at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Cavaliers finished third with 115 points, behind Syracuse (46) and NC State (96). Virginia Tech (120) and Louisville (130) rounded out the top five.
Sophomore Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) was eighth overall in 23:45.6, while junior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) was 10th in 23:56.0 to earn All-ACC honors. Junior Thomas Madden (Front Royal, Va.) placed 25th, while senior Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) and sophomore Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) finished the scoring five, placing 33rd and 40th overall.
“It was a big disappointment, but I thought Chase Weaverling and Henry Wynne were really good today,” UVA men’s head coach Pete Watson said. “That is the best cross country race Chase has ever run and Henry was great again for us. Thomas Madden coming across 25th for us was a good run, but our other guys need to figure out how to fight when it matters.”
“Disappointing, but it’s the beginning of the championship season and just step one of three,” UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “The conference is so tough overall and you have to put forth an incredible effort to be successful. We had a couple of individuals that did not have a great day and we have to learn from it, move on and not dwell on it. We have had accomplished a lot of great things so far this year and we have a lot more to go.”
The meet signified the men’s and women’s cross country matchups between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia athletics. The Cavaliers picked up two points by way of finishing ahead of Virginia Tech in both the men’s and women’s races Friday. The Cavaliers return to action in two weeks when they host the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Nov. 13 at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
