CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Senior defender Emily Sonnett (Marietta, Ga.) has been named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy honoring the nation’s top collegiate soccer player, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced on Tuesday (Dec. 1).
She is one of 15 players on the semifinalist list for the women’s side of the game. Three women’s players will be named finalists on Friday, Dec. 11 during the 2015 NCAA Men’s College Cup in Cary, N.C. Fans can vote for Sonnett in the online voting at: www.LockerDome.com/machermanntrophy.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual intercollegiate award administered by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and presented annually at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. This year’s trophy presentation and banquet will take place Friday, Jan. 8.
Named the ESPNW National Player of the Year and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Sonnett helped the Cavaliers to a 19-1-3 record on the season and the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Virginia posted a 9-1 mark in conference play, claiming the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship and advanced to the finals of the ACC Women’s Soccer Championship.
The senior anchored a back line that posted 15 shutouts this season, including 14 victories and one draw, while allowing only 12 goals through 23 matches. The Cavaliers picked up shutout victories over five nationally-ranked foes while going 6-1-3 against the top 25 on the year.
Sonnett earned her first cap this season, playing in two matches with the USWNT in friendlies against the Brazilian national team as a part of the Victory Tour from this summer’s World Cup Win by the United States.
In her four years with Virginia, the Cavaliers have recorded 84 victories with Sonnett and the back line has tallied shutouts in 54 of them for 64 percent of the wins posted over the last four years coming without allowing a goal. Virginia has only allowed 65 goals through 100 matches played in that time.
Morgan Brian won the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2013 and 2014, while the Cavaliers have had a finalist in each of the last three seasons.
