CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball program added two signees for the 2016-17 academic year with the signing of Ashlee Davis and Janelle Zellars to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Blake Miller announced on Wednesday (Jan. 6).

Davis and Zellars will be eligible to compete with the Cavaliers beginning with the 2016-17 academic school year.A middle infielder at Highland High School in Gilbert, Ariz., Davis hit .416 as a junior with 42 RBI, eight home runs and 30 runs scored. She holds a career batting average of .403 with 68 RBI and 71 runs scored. She was named an all-state honorable mention selection in 2014.

“Ashlee is a strong, gritty middle infielder with gap-to-gap power,” Miller said. “She has the power to hit it out of the park occasionally, but she really shores up our infield. She brings more grit that we really need to make us a tougher team.”

A pitcher at Jefferson Forest High School in Forest, Va., Zellars helped lead the Jefferson Forest Cavaliers to the North Region quarterfinals as a junior in 2015. She also competes with the Firecrackers Gontram 18U travel softball team.

“Janelle is a good lefty pitcher who has a lot of good potential for us, especially in lefty-lefty matchups,” Miller said. “She has a good rise ball and a pretty good dipper. Hitting wise, she has good potential as a hitter, but we are mainly looking for her to come in and contribute in the circle.”

Virginia opens its 2016 season at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State on Thursday, Feb. 11. The Cavaliers will play five games at the weekend event, including contests against Utah State, Boise State, Northwestern, East Carolina and San Jose State.
