RALEIGH, N.C. – Nationally-ranked wrestlers George DiCamillo (Highland Heights, Ohio) and Zach Nye (Enola, Pa.) picked up wins on Sunday as No. 17 Virginia (5-3, 0-1 ACC) fell 35-7 to No. 3 NC State (17-0, 1-0 ACC) in action at Dorton Arena.

DiCamillo, ranked No. 6 at 133 pounds, picked up a 17-2 tech fall against Jamaal Morris to get the Cavaliers on the board in the meet. Nye, who is ranked No. 10 at 197 pounds, then picked up a 5-3 decision over No. 17 Michael Boykin to close out the meet.

“What happened today can’t happen again, ever,” said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. “We got out hustled in most positions and we got beat in the positions we are good at. They attacked and showed confidence and for the most part we did not. George, Andrew (Atkinson) and Nye all fought. They fought hard and gave everything they had, but we need more.”

In one of the most hotly contested bouts of the afternoon, Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) fell to No. 6 Tommy Gant in an 11-9 decision at 157 pounds. In a match that featured back-and-forth scoring, a takedown as time expired gave Gant the win over the Cavalier’s Atkinson.

“We need a lot more from our team right now. They know that. I do believe in the resolve and work ethic of this team. They have shown the ability to bounce back time and time again. We went through tough spots last year and always rebounded. Now it’s time to respond. I’m thankful we have a quick turnaround and opportunity Friday at home. We have an opportunity to respond.”

Virginia will return to action on Friday, Jan. 22, when the Cavaliers host Duke at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gym. Admission to all wrestling matches is free.
