Greensboro, N.C. – A pair of finals finishes in the 500-yard freestyle were the highlights for Virginia during the second day of competition at the ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship in Greensboro, N.C.

At the midway point of the meet, the Cavaliers are in fifth place with 310 points. NC State leads the 12-team field with 491 points followed by Virginia Tech (399) and Louisville (376).

Thursday’s competition featured three individual championships and one relay event.

UVA advanced two swimmers to the A-Finals in the 500 free. Sam Magnan (Bethlehem, Pa.) placed seventh and Matthew Hrabchak (Concord, Mass.) was eighth for the Cavaliers. Magnan turned in a time of 4:23.86 while Hrabchak finished at 4:24.82. During the morning prelims, Magnan swam the event in 4:22.0, the second best time of the year by a Cavalier.

Sophomore Omer Tara (Istanbul, Turkey) and freshman Daniel Golczewski (Bel Air, Md.) also picked up points for UVA in the event by reaching the C-Final. Tara was third in the heat (4:24.73) while Golczewski swam in 4:26.64.

UVA advanced two swimmers to the evening sessions of both the 200-yard individual medley and the 50-yard freestyle races.

In the 200 IM, freshman Zach Fong (Mooresville, N.J.) placed fifth in the C-Final with a time of 1:46.76 while junior Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) was seventh in the B-Final at 1:46.90. In the 50 Free, sophomore Nicholas Magana (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was fifth in the C-Final at 20.19 and junior Matt Lockman (Charlottesville, Va.) was eighth in the B-Final at 20.09.

The Cavaliers wrapped up the second day with an eighth-finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Lockman, Magana, freshman Gust Kouvaris (Troy, Mich.) and sophomore Luke Georgiadis (Jacksonville, Fla.) posted a time of 1:19.37. That was UVA’s second best time this season in the event.

Friday’s race schedule features the 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke and 400 Medley Relay.
