WILMINGTON, N.C.-The Virginia softball team dropped a pair of games on the first day of the Seahawk Softball Showcase Saturday (March 5) at the Boseman Field. The Cavaliers (6-11) fell to UNCW, 2-1, and Radford, 6-3.

Down 3-0 in the fourth in the second game, junior Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, to put the Cavaliers on the board. Sophomore Lauren Heintzelman (Southlake, Texas) tied the game later in the inning after coming home on a Highlander error.

Radford came right back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run two-out hit to take a 5-3 lead. The Highlanders (8-4) added an unearned run in the sixth to close out the scoring.

Freshman Lacy Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) pitched four-plus innings, allowing five runs (four earned) with five strikeouts. Fellow freshman Erika Osherow (Darien Conn.) came in and threw two innings with only an unearned run coming across.

In the first game, Osherow pitched a complete game with four strikeouts, but the Seahawks (11-5) scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning to win, 2-1.

The Cavaliers had five hits in the game with their only run coming on an opposite-field solo home run in the second inning by junior Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.), her third of the season.

Sarah Davis (4-1) earned the win for UNCW with five strikeouts in seven innings.

The Seahawk Softball Showcase continues Sunday (March 6) when the Cavaliers face UNCW at 10 a.m and Radford at 3 p.m.
