The Virginia women’s golf team produced its best finish of the season against a loaded field to finish second at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C. Senior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) led the Cavaliers by tying for runner-up honors.

UVA finished the three-day, 54-hole event at the Long Cove Club by shooting 23-over 875. The Cavaliers final round score was 12-over 296. No. 4 Alabama took the team title at 16-over 868. No. 2 Duke was three strokes behind the UVA in third place at 878.

The 17-team field included 12 teams ranked in the current Golfstat standings, including the top-five ranked teams in the nation.

Coughlin shot 4-over 75 during Sunday’s final round and had to settle for a tie for second after sharing the lead after the first two days of play. She finished at 1-over 214, just one stroke behind tournament medalist Cheyenne Knight of Alabama.

The team played really well,” said Virginia coach Kim Lewellen. “We fought hard on wonderful golf course that had some tough difficult pin placements. We are thrilled with our finish and look forward to taking the success we had here, building on it, and getting ready for the championship season.”

Coughlin’s finish matched the best tournament showing of her career. She was also the runner up at the Mason Rudolph Championship last fall. It was her fourth top-10 performance this year.

Classmate Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) also produced a top-10 finish for the Hoos. Szokol shot 1-over 72 on Sunday to move into seventh place at 4-over 217.

Freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) and junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) tied for 26th at 222 while freshman Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) was 39th at 225. Diaz-Yi shot 74 on Sunday while Gonzales and Redding posted scores of 75.

The Cavaliers are off until April 1-3 when they travel to Greensboro for the Bryan National Collegiate, their final regular-season tournament.
