Virginia Opens Spring Season With Washington Spirit Saturday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Virginia women’s soccer team opens its spring exhibition season on Saturday (March 19), traveling to face the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) at 7 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

Admission to the match is free, but fans are asked to register for the event at: washingtonspirit.ticketmob.com/shows.cfm.

Virginia is coming off an appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament after going 19-1-3 on the season. The Cavaliers claimed the ACC regular season championship after going 9-1 in conference play.

The Cavaliers return All-ACC performer Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) at midfield, and ACC All-Freshman selections Betsy Brandon (Littleton, Colo.) at midfield and Courtney Petersen (Canton, Mich.) at midfield/defender. Shaffer was also named an NSCAA All-Region selection along with defender Kristen McNabb (Montville, N.J), who also returns.
