LOUISVILLE, Ky.-The No. 9 Virginia baseball team (17-7, 5-3 ACC) fell to No. 7 Louisville, 11-4, Saturday afternoon (March 26) at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville, Ky. The Cardinals (18-5, 5-3 ACC) hit three home runs and scored 11 runs on 11 hits.

The Cavaliers struck first in the top of the first inning when Adam Haseley (So., Windermere, Fla.) and Ernie Clement (So., Rochester, N.Y.) led off with back-to-back singles. Haseley scored on a wild pitch and Clement came around to score on a double play.

Louisville responded with three runs in the bottom of the first on a bases clearing triple by Blake Tiberi and back-to-back solo home runs by Corey Ray and Colby Fitch in the second inning.

After the Cardinals scored a run in each of the next three innings, Matt Thaiss (Jr., Jackson, N.J.) reached on an error, advanced to third on a single by Pavin Smith (Jupiter, Fla.) and scored on an infield single by Daniel Pinero (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) in the sixth.

The Cavaliers scored the final run of the game in the ninth when Ryan Karstetter (Fr., State College, Pa.) went home on bases-loaded ground ball that was muffed by Louisville reliever Anthony Kidston.

Brendan McKay (5-1) allowed three runs (one earned) in eight innings with nine strikeouts to earn the win for Louisville.

Daniel Lynch (Fr., Henrico, Va.) took the loss for Virginia, falling to 1-2, after allowing five runs in 1.1 innings of work.

The two teams play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
