CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 12 Virginia women’s tennis team (11-9, 6-5 ACC) fell 4-3 to No. 16 Georgia Tech (13-6, 8-2 ACC) on Sunday (April 3) at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia trailed Georgia Tech, 3-1, after dropping the doubles point and falling at No. 2 and No. 6 singles when freshman Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Me.) battled back from a 6-1 loss in her second set to win her match 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 over Kendal Woodard at No. 4 singles. Senior Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) tied the match at 3-3 when she battled through a second-set tiebreaker, coming out ahead 7-2 to win 7-5, 7-6 over Rasheeda McAdoo. No. 5 singles was on serve in the third set when Nauta tied the match, but Alexis Prokopuik promptly went up a break and held on for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over junior Victoria Olivarez (Virginia Beach, Va.) to secure the victory for the Yellow Jackets.

“This was a tough weekend for us,” said Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. “I thought we were really spirited on Friday, but today we came out a little bit less than that. Georgia Tech was really on it in the beginning of the match. They imposed physically with their shots. I thought we fought back, but the doubles hurt us a lot. Credit to both teams, but Georgia Tech was just a bit better today.”

Senior Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), currently ranked No. 4 in singles, earned Virginia’s first point with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 30 Johnnise Renaud at No. 1.

The Cavaliers will play at Virginia Tech next Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. in Blacksburg before closing out the regular season with a pair of home matches against Pittsburgh on Friday, April 15 at 3 p.m. and Notre Dame on Sunday, April 17 at 10 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
