GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia’s Varsity Eight was named Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week after leading the fourth-ranked Cavaliers to a sweep of all four races against eight-ranked Texas last Saturday (April 30) on Walter E. Long Lake in Austin, Texas.

The Virginia V8, aided by a 6-to-10 mile per hour tailwind, recorded a season’s best time of 5:58.8 in defeating the Varsity Eight crew from Texas (6:03.2). The UVA V8 was also named ACC Crew of the Week on March 15.

The win set the tone for the day for Virginia, as its Second Varsity Eight posted its best time of the year, a 6:05.7 clocking in defeating the Longhorn crew (6:07.7) by just two seconds. UVA’s Varsity Four finished 11 seconds in front of its Texas counterparts (7:01.7) with its fastest clocking of the year (6:50.3) and the UVA Second Varsity Four also had its best time of the year (6:59.5) in besting two Texas teams.

Virginia’s First Varsity Eight is composed of coxswain Colette Lucas-Conwell (Jr., Palo Alto, Calif.), Stroke: Tessa Dikkers (Sr., Pelham, N.Y.), 7-Seat: Georgia Ratcliff (Jr., Falls Church, Va.), 6-Seat: Eliza Spilsbury (So., Centreville, Mass.), 5-Seat: Heidi Long (Fr., Buckinghamshire, England), 4-Seat: Erin Briggs (Jr., Orono, Minn.), 3-Seat: Jennifer Reid (Sr., Stafford, Va.), 2-Seat: Alice Darry (So., West Melton, New Zealand), and Bow: Sam Casto (Sr., Dallas, Pa.).

Virginia’s V8 boat was chosen over the Clemson Varsity Four, which posted a time of 7:26.6 in defeating Iowa (7:30.0), UCF (7:36.8) and Tennessee (7:37.1) in winning the event at the Tennessee Invitational Conference Clash last Sunday at Melton Lake, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

UVA returns to action at the 17th Annual ACC Rowing Championships on Friday-Saturday, May 13-14 on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, South Carolina. Friday heats begin at 6 p.m. and the seeds and lane assignments for the event will be announced this Wednesday. The 2016 ACC Rowing Championship finals, which will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, will be available live on ESPN3.
