CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ââ’¬” Virginia women’s lacrosse senior Sarah Gillespie (Mendham, N.J.), junior Maggie Preas (Rockville, Md.) and sophomore Rachel Vander Kolk (Severna Park, Md.) named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic Team, the league office announced on Monday (June 20).

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and hold a 3.0 cumulative grade point average during one’s academic career.

Gillespie is a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member. Not only a standout in the classroom, Gillespie was a four-year starter on defense for the Cavaliers and graduated with her degree in Global Studies in May. She tallied 16 ground balls, seven caused turnovers and seven draw controls in 2016.

Preas, a member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll as a sophomore, is a double major in Anthropology and Spanish. The IWLCA All-South Region selection helped lead the UVA defense with 23 ground balls, 35 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers last season.

Vander Kolk, an aerospace engineering major, has been the primary goalkeeper for Virginia the last two seasons. In 2016, she played all but nine minutes in goal and collected 132 saves. Vander Kolk ranked third in the ACC with 7.33 saves per game.
